The Middle of Nowhere A New Desk

A New Desk

So one of our weekly ventures into Michaels....never good by the way. We came out with Liquitex Spray paint. They WERE on sale!!!! Buy 2 get one free! It worked out perfectly because we needed them for a couple different projects anyways. We planned on refurbishing this makeup table for one of our bedrooms. Initially this table was a kids table and then repainted as shown in the "Before" picture. But now it just seems like it's blending in too much with everything else. So we decided to add a little bit of life back into this old table.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

MATERIALS:
Spray paint: Luiquitex (Burnt Sienna 7 & Cadmium Red Light Hue 6)
drawer knobs from Anthropologie
Acrylic Paint: Metallic Gold, Ivory, Blanco
Martha stewart paint roller
Stencil
Sand paper (& sand paper machine, optional)
QUICK STEPS:
1. Using sand paper, brush it all around the table to smoothen the surface. I used a machine to do it for quicker results.
2. (Optional): Apply primer.
3. Sprayed the table, excluding the top with Liquitex Burnt Sienna 7. Cover all areas. Let it dry
4. Sprayed the top with Liquitex Cadmium Red Light Hue 6. Let it dry
5. align the stencil accordingly. Table the stencil down with scotch tape. Use Martha stewart paint roller to apply the Metallic Gold Acrylic Paint. Repeat this step for other areas you desire.
6. Mix the Ivory Acrylic Paint and Blanco Acrylic Paint together to lighten it up. I used these two combination because I was working with what I had.
4. Using a brush, apply the mixed paint onto the edges and the drawers. It could be messy to give it texture as well as allowing the bottom paint to seep through a bit.
5. Using the Martha stewart paint roller, apply Metallic Gold Acrylic Paint over the top surface. Apply 1-2 coats. This should be done once the stencil has dried otherwise you could risk smudging the stencil art.
6. Screw in the drawer knobs.

The Middle of Nowhere

First post on our blog!!! Today was quite an adventure. We had no prior knowledge of what our day contained nor did we plan on purchasing pallets. But then again, it seems like we never really do the projects we initially set out to do. It always ends up being something else.
We can't even recall how pallets came up to be of subject anymore except that one of us briefly mentioned wanting to make a summer table for the patio outdoors. The next thing we know we found a lady on craigslist who sounded like she just wanted to get rid of them. So we hopped onto the Prius and drove up to Trabuco Canyon to retrieve these beautiful babies. Along the way we tried capturing images to note of our spontaneous mini road trip.
The second we got onto the mountain the roads were fairly empty. It felt as if we were driving into the country side. The long stretch of road with trees on both sides of the road seemed to be endless. At the end of our destination we reached a neighborhood that reminded us of Big Bear; one way roads with houses built close to one another. Everyone knew everyone.

She had about twenty pallets lying around. We had to go through most of them to pick out which ones would make it back home with us. After some time we were able to pick out five good ones. Three of the pallets would go into making a summer table for the patio and the other two would go into making a headboard for one of our bedrooms.

Its amazing to see how a 30 minute drive changes one so much. The women here seem to be more active and hands on with the work around the house. This woman was nice enough to help us saw part of the pallet because it wouldn't fit into the car.

Our accomplishment for the day would probably be loading up these pallets into the Prius. Although the prius is quite big for a sedan, fitting five pallets into the back was a big challenge.
Driving back with our smiley faces on and our accomplishments in the back. What an awesome day!

To end our day of adventure, we grabbed fish tacos @ California Fish Grill. The perfect way to satisfy our stomach after burning all our energy lifting pallets.
